Big Cottonwood Canyon, UT — Two children are in critical condition after a 31-year-old father and his three children went missing during a hike in Utah’s Big Cottonwood Canyon over the weekend. The family was found on Sunday, October 12, after spending the night lost in the canyon, according to reports.
Family Goes Missing During Hike
The father, 31-year-old, and his children — a 2-year-old boy, 4-year-old boy, and 8-year-old girl — were reported missing after they failed to return from a hike on the Broads Fork Trail in Big Cottonwood Canyon on Saturday, October 11.
After the family’s vehicle was located in the Broads Fork parking lot, authorities launched a search and rescue mission.
“The family went missing Saturday during a hiking trip, and after a search, they were located the next day,” said the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Search and Rescue Efforts
On Sunday, October 12, first responders located the family members, and all four were transported to local hospitals for medical care.
Reports from Fox 13 Salt Lake City indicated that two of the children were found in critical condition, while the third child was in a stable condition. The father was reported to be in fair condition.
“The family was found and all were taken to the hospital. Two children remain in critical condition, but the father is stable,” said the sheriff’s office in a statement.
While the exact nature of the family’s injuries has not been disclosed, search and rescue teams from the Utah Department of Public Safety and LifeFlight assisted in the operation.
