On January 31, 2025, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) made an announcement regarding a recall of fresh and frozen sausage links.
DJ’s Boudain brand sausages have been recalled due to the possibility of containing bits of a foreign object. More than 17,000 pounds of the product have been affected.
A client bit into a sausage that had a foreign item in it, which turned out to be a piece of a pen, and suffered a damage to their mouth. This is why the recall was made.
The FSIS recommends that people inspect their freezers and refrigerators for the meat that has been recalled. The recall applies to sausages that were transported to Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana, including food distributors, restaurants, and retail establishments.
Due to the participation of food distributors, it is probable that sausages were transported and sold outside of the three states where they were originally shipped.
The recalled sausages should either be thrown away or taken back to the store where they were bought.
The sausage links that are impacted are both regular and jalapeño types. They are marked with the establishment number “EST. 13246” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

If you would like to learn more about this recall, please reach out to DJ’s Boudain by calling 409-842-0558 or by emailing Jonathan Wallace, the company’s director of operations, at jwallace@djsboudain.com.
Meat recalls happen rather often
In recent years, meat recalls have become more prevalent, however recalls due to possible contamination by a foreign object are not nearly as common as those due to suspected bacterial contamination.
For example, in November 2024, 160,000 pounds of beef were recalled due to fears about E. coli contamination.
In the same year, a listeria epidemic caused the recall of 7 million pounds of Boar’s Head deli meats, which were connected to the illnesses and deaths of consumers who had eaten the contaminated product.

In 2023, there was a similar occurrence in which a rubbery substance was discovered in several packages of ground beef, even though recalls of foreign objects are not very common.
As a result of that discovery, 2,000 pounds of the meat that may have been contaminated were recalled. The rubbery substance in issue was identified as neoprene, which may have been a component of a glove worn by someone who handles food.

The FSIS has not received any reports of additional injuries linked to the recall of DJ’s Boudain sausage links. However, if customers need to report a concern with a meat, poultry, or egg product, they can do so using the USDA’s Electronic Consumer Complaint Monitoring System.
