After allegedly driving under the influence and triggering a deadly crash in Dana Point that claimed the life of an 88-year-old man and injured another, the head of a California mortgage lender was placed under arrest.
On the evening of Friday, January 31, 2025, Serene Francie Rosenberg, 48, is charged with speeding through a red light in her Land Rover and striking a Ford Transit van head-on.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department reports that the collision happened near Dana Point, a seaside city about 60 miles south of Los Angeles, at approximately 6:15 p.m.
Melvin Joseph Weibel, an 88-year-old Dana Point man, was the passenger in the vehicle when the collision struck, and the impact was so severe that he died instantaneously.
Although no additional information has been released regarding their status, the van’s driver was taken to a nearby hospital with severe but non-life-threatening injuries.
“Based on preliminary investigation, the Land Rover was traveling westbound on Stonehill Drive and turned left against a red arrow signal in front of the Ford Transit van traveling eastbound on Stonehill Drive,” according to the sheriff’s department.
Rosenberg was detained at the scene on suspicion of murder and driving under the influence (DUI). Rosenberg has been the president of OCMBC’s LoanStream Mortgage in Irvine since 2019.
Concerns have been raised about Rosenberg’s past legal issues after authorities disclosed that she had three prior convictions prior to this occurrence. She was arrested and is being held at the Orange County Jail at the moment.
LoanStream Mortgage released a statement expressing their sympathy for the unfortunate accident after the fatal incident. In a major move, the corporation stated that Rosenberg had been placed on administrative leave and that he had been replaced as president for good.
The position was filled by the company’s previous Chief Capital Markets Officer, John Hamel.
Additionally, the business expressed its sincere condolences to the victim’s family and other accident victims. In 1992, Aziz started LoanStream Mortgage, which now has operations in 47 U.S. states.

Due to the severity of the collision and the fact that Rosenberg, a senior executive at a large mortgage firm, was allegedly driving while intoxicated, the tragic event has attracted a lot of attention.
To help with the investigation, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department has asked anyone who saw the collision or has information to get in touch with their Traffic Bureau.
