Virginia Teen Injured in School Fight, Another Student to Face Charges

According to school and police officials, a 16-year-old student was seriously hurt when someone stabbed them during a fight at West Potomac High School in Alexandria, Virginia, on April 23. The student was taken to the hospital.

Police said the fight happened just before 9:45 a.m. local time, and a school resource officer ran to help the student who was hurt.

A 15-year-old student from the school will be charged with malicious wounding, Fairfax County Police Major Elizabeth Melendez said at a press meeting at the school after the fight.

Detectives are talking to a third student, according to Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis. However, Davis said, “at this point, we don’t expect any criminal charges to be brought against this third person.” Davis also said that the person who was hurt was in “stable condition.”

At the news conference, not a single student was named.

NBC News Washington said that pictures and videos of the fight and what happened after it were going around the school.

Parents were angry that the district hadn’t told them anything about what happened, so they approached Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Michelle Reid at the press conference.

“Why can’t I go see my daughter?” An angry man, named Bill Beal by NBC Washington, yelled at Reid during the news conference, “That’s all I care about!”

Reid replied that the building was being locked down and that staff were making sure that kids could get to lunch.

“I don’t care about lunch right now!” Beal replied. “That’s not an acceptable answer.”
