Prosecutors: Man Knowingly Infected His Wife With AIDS Before Her Death

A Georgia man is being charged with murder after his wife died after being diagnosed with AIDS. Prosecutors say he knew he had HIV but never told her.

In the past, Cleveland Broadie, who is in his early 60s, was charged with reckless behavior after his wife Denise Broadie died in April 2022, just two days after being told she had AIDS. He has now been charged with malicious murder and felony murder in connection with the death of Denise Broadie.

Following her death, Denise Broadie’s family believed that their dad knew he had HIV when he married their mother in 2014 but forgot to update her on his condition. A local Fox station, WAGA, talked to the family. The family hired a private detective to look into Cleveland Broadie’s life before he joined their family.

In the last few years of her life, Denise Broadie also had cancer. A local CBS station, WANF, said she was first diagnosed in 2017 and then went into recovery. In 2019, the cancer came back, but Denise Broadie beat it again.

But she was said to still be sick. That’s when new tests showed that she had AIDS when she went to a different hospital for care. A warrant for Denise Broadie’s arrest that looked at says she was identified with AIDS on March 31, 2022, and “died” on April 2, 2022.

It’s possible that she didn’t know she had AIDS for years, even though she could have been treated for it during that time.

But her daughter Karen Young says Cleveland Broadie never told her the truth.

He did what he did out of spite, Young told WAGA. For any reason, he could have told her at any time and let her choose whether to stay with him. She wouldn’t have, though.

The death of his wife was linked to three charges of reckless conduct that Cleveland Broadie faced in court. All three charges were made in 2023. Authorities said at the time that he had known since 2006 that he had HIV but had never told any of his sexual partners.

WANF says that another woman came forward, which led to a second charge of reckless behavior. Soon after, a third charge was made when another woman came forward. “Multiple women” had come forward in reaction to the story, the station said.

On July 8, 2023, Cleveland Broadie was caught and put in jail. He said he wasn’t guilty of the three charges of reckless behavior. On Friday, it wasn’t clear right away if he had pleaded guilty to the murder charges.
