North Texas Welcomes Over 100 Shelter Pets Relocated from California Wildfires

As two flights full with people arrived at the Meacham airport in Fort Worth on Sunday, all eyes were focused on the runway in anticipation of a very unusual arrival: the kind of planes that have four legs.

Wings of Rescue was responsible for the transportation of one hundred seventy-six dogs and cats that were not owned by their owners from Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon.

Several animal rescue organizations in North Texas are participating in this enormous effort to alleviate the strain that has been placed on animal shelters in California as a result of the wildfires. These shelters have been forced to take in hundreds of dogs.

“These pets were already in the Los Angeles system waiting for adoption so we are pulling these pets from these shelters in order for evacuees and their pets to be reunited,” Cassie Davidson, of the Humane Society of North Texas stated.

By moving these animals to Texas, they are making room for animals that have been injured or separated from their family. Shelters in the Los Angeles area are already operating at a capacity that is 300–500% higher than their actual capacity.

When it comes to providing assistance to shelters in Los Angeles, Cassie Davidson, who works for the Humane Society of North Texas, has been present and performing her duties.

“You’re gonna make me cry because I’m gonna tell you it is gripping,” Davidson stated. “So to see that they are so overcapacity and they’re intaking pets that have been burned.”

The dogs and cats in question were given medical attention, subjected to temperament evaluations, and groomed before they were allowed to board their flight. As of right now, all they require is a forever home.

“What we need right now from our community is to really step up; foster, donate, volunteer it all will make a difference in the lives of these pets,” Davidson stated.

According to the Humane Society of North Texas, this will not result in the displacement of pets who are now housed in shelters in the state of Texas.

As a result of the fact that more than 400 individuals have already volunteered to become foster parents for these dogs and cats, this situation has arisen.

“I just want to remind everybody that California stood in the gap when we had hurricanes here in Texas and so were going to give back,” Davidson stated. “At the heart of the Humane Society of North Texas’ mission is pets and people saving each other and we are going to stand in the gap.”

This coming weekend, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the Humane Society of North Texas, which is only one of the organizations that spearheaded the efforts on Sunday, will be having an adoption event at their Fort Worth site. At this event, you will get the opportunity to meet and adopt these California dogs.
