On Thursday, Frank LaRose, the Secretary of State of Ohio, declared his intention to run for state auditor in 2026.
This announcement is part of a larger trend among Ohio’s top-ranking Republicans. LaRose, who has become one of the most well-known political leaders in the state, will be looking to become the auditor when he has served the maximum number of terms as the state’s elections chief.
LaRose, who is 45 years old, made a prior attempt to get the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in 2024. However, he ended up losing the three-way primary to Bernie Moreno, a businessman and Republican candidate.
Moreno would eventually win the general election, beating the incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown.
“I’ve always answered the call of duty, and I’ve had a lot of encouragement from across Ohio to consider serving in this important office,” LaRose stated.
LaRose presented a video on X (previously Twitter) in which he highlighted the accomplishments that have been done under his leadership in managing elections in Ohio. He stated that the state has become a “gold standard in trustworthy and accessible elections.”
LaRose stated that he plans to bring the same ideals of transparency, efficiency, and accountability to the position of state auditor.
He promised to make sure that every government office in Ohio adheres to the same strict standards that he advocated for in the area of elections.
LaRose’s announcement comes at a time when several other officeholders who are limited to a certain number of terms are making their political future plans known.

He is the last of the five statewide executive officeholders in Ohio with term limits to announce what he will do next, which adds to the state’s ongoing political reshuffling.
His career as a U.S. Army Green Beret and his past work as a state senator demonstrate that he has a lot of expertise in both public service and leadership. These are things that he will probably focus on when he runs for the position of state auditor.
