FDA Raises Risk Level to Maximum for Chocolate Recall Across 9 States

Due to an unreported allergy, three chocolate products from the same producer have been assigned the highest recall status.

Due to the presence of unreported milk, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified Cal Yee Farm’s Dark Chocolate Almonds, Dark Chocolate Apricots, and Dark Chocolate Walnuts as a Class 1 recall.

According to the FDA, a Class 1 recall indicates that eating or being exposed to the chocolates could result in “serious adverse health consequences or death.”

These chocolates may have “serious adverse health consequences” because of milk, one of the FDA’s nine “major food allergens.”

They must be disclosed on food products since they can cause hives, cramping, lightheadedness, enlarged voice cords, and even coma.

On December 12, Cal Yee Farms recalled the chocolates from its two retail locations in California as well as from eight other states where customers can order over the phone or online: Arizona, Virginia, New Mexico, Texas, Tennessee, Oregon, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Due to additional unreported allergens including almond, soy, wheat, sesame, and FD&C #6 food coloring, a number of additional Cal Yee Farms chocolates that were not part of the January 22 classification update were also recalled on December 12.

Different classification updates have been applied to the other chocolates. Chocolates with undeclared almonds and FD&C #6 were classified as Class II, while those with undeclared wheat and soy were classified as Class 1.

According to the FDA, this categorization indicates that the item may have “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,”

Cal Yee Farms stated in a news release during the December recall that “No illnesses have been reported to date.”

As of January 2025, the FDA has recalled six additional goods because they contained unreported milk.

The administration recalled a number of NuGo granola bars on January 10; the FDA recalled Pearl Milling Company’s Pancake and Waffle Mix on January 15; New York Mutual Trading’s Monkfish Liver and three Monkey Spit barbecue sauces that also contained undeclared wheat and soy on January 1; and Shirakiku’s curry-flavored Curvee Puffs Corn Puff Snack on January 20.
