Democratic Infighting and the 2024 Primary Decision
Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) has once again warned that policies emerging under the Trump administration align with what he previously termed “Jim Crow 2.0.”
Speaking with CNN’s Brianna Keilar on Wednesday, Clyburn was asked about the connection between the Democratic Party’s internal conflicts and its decision not to hold a traditional primary in 2024.
“What does DEI have to do with Jackie Robinson and Medgar Evers? And what did it have to do with saying it is no longer persona non grata to have government-sponsored events in segregated establishments?” Clyburn questioned. “This is the establishment of Jim Crow 2.0. I said that before we ever had the election, and it’s coming true.”
Project 2025 and Civil Rights Concerns
Clyburn was referring to his October remarks in which he labeled the conservative policy agenda known as Project 2025 as an effort to reinstate racial segregation policies reminiscent of the early 20th century.
The South Carolina Democrat provided historical context, noting that he was only the ninth Black lawmaker elected from his state—nearly a century after the previous Black congressman. He argued that Project 2025 poses a threat to civil rights gains and draws disturbing parallels to past segregationist policies.
While former President Trump has attempted to distance himself from Project 2025, the initiative—drafted by the conservative Heritage Foundation—has already faced scrutiny. The former leader of Project 2025 recently stated that early actions taken by the administration closely align with its principles.

“I would hope that we would stop running around chasing these shiny objects and begin to focus the American people on exactly what this administration is doing,” he said.
