Illinois Schools Announce Closures and Shifts Due to Dangerous Cold on Tuesday

As wind chills that are dangerously cold are expected to strike the region, some schools in the Chicago area have stated that they will be closing their doors or have converted to e-learning for Tuesday.

On Monday, many schools were already closed in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day; however, the severe cold caused additional closures for Tuesday, as temperatures were projected to deteriorate overnight. This was due to the fact that the cold was expected to continue.

The Chicago metropolitan area had been issued a cold weather alert, which served as a warning to citizens about the extremely low temperatures.

On Monday, the advisory remained in effect until twelve o’clock in the afternoon, and wind chills reached as low as twenty degrees below zero. It was anticipated that it will go into force once more at nine o’clock at night.

Starting on Monday and continuing through Tuesday at twelve o’clock noon, wind chills could potentially drop as low as twenty to twenty-five degrees below zero.

There was a forecast that indicated that the weather on Tuesday morning would be very severe, with temperatures hovering around -6 degrees and wind chills ranging from -15 to -25 degrees as well.

As a result of the extremely low temperatures, a number of educational institutions decided to take preventative precautions.

There were a number of schools in the Chicago area that were slated to be shuttered, as stated by the Emergency Closing Center. These schools included Horizon Science Academy Belmont in Chicago, City of Hobart Schools in Indiana, District 155 in Calumet City, and Faith Movers Academy in University Park.

Despite the fact that it was not immediately evident what caused all of the closures, a significant number of them were ascribed to the chilly weather.
