Over the course of the weekend, a big police response was provoked by a fight and a stabbing that occurred in two of the most prominent shopping and dining districts in San Jose.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, a large number of San Jose Police units rushed on San Pedro Square in response to a fight that had broken out and spread into the surrounding streets.
The incoming policemen were then attacked by several of the individuals involved, according to the police. Eight individuals were taken into custody on a variety of charges, one of which was battery on a law enforcement officer.
Omar, a neighbor who was taken aback by the events that transpired in front of him, happened to shoot a video that showed dozens of police cars.
“I’ve never seen that many police officers before. At first, I thought it was some kind of bomb or instrument. I was so terrified that I asked myself, “What the hell is going on?” remarked Omar.
After a 15-year-old boy was fatally stabbed at Santana Row, it marked the beginning of a weekend filled with violence at renowned night places in San Jose.
The man, identified as David Gutierrez, was reportedly assaulted when he was out on a Valentine’s Day date with his girlfriend, according to a fundraising website. Neither suspects nor a motive have been identified by the police.
Monday marked the return of the crowds to the shopping district; nevertheless, a neighbor said that the level of security has been increasing.
I feel that it is frightening, and I do believe that there is some inappropriate activity that is not caught all the time, especially late at night and on the weekends. “At this point, I believe that it has reached an unacceptable level, and we need to take action to address it,” said Shivi, who resides on Santana Row.
Santana Row and San Pedro Square are not considered to be major crime hotspots, as stated on the website of the Police Department’s crime mapping program, which provides information regarding the precise locations of crimes that have been reported.
On the other hand, Alex Stettinski, the President of the San Jose Downtown Association, stated that he does not believe that what occurred here is any kind of trend.
According to Stettinski, the majority of businesses inside the neighborhood have private security, and the city police do routine patrols in the vicinity.
