Robyn Brown Opens Up About Why She Never Desired Legal Marriage with Kody on Sister Wives

Robyn Brown’s goal of establishing a large, happy, and polygamous family has been generally known for a very long time.

On the other hand, it would appear that the concept of a legal marriage to one’s husband, Kody Brown, was not necessarily included in that picture.

During the episode of Sister Wives that aired on Sunday, December 29, Meri Brown, Janelle Brown, and Christine Brown discussed the decision that Meri made to divorce Kody, who was 55 years old at the time, in order to allow him to legally marry Robyn, who was 46 years old on the same day.

In his own words, Kody “never felt like that legal divorce did anything to us.”

Kody told the cameras that Meri, his first wife, had been catfished by a female admirer posing as a man. “Meri volunteered it but for some reason, it still had an emotional impact on her because shortly after was when she went through the catfish experience,” he said.

In a different confessional, Meri explained that she was of the opinion that the official divorce with Kody was the thing that she absolutely “needed to do.” Next, she related that the father of the Brown family was “really kind” and “present in our relationship for, you know, a month or so” before things began to deteriorate.

She said that this occurred before things began to fade. She went on to say that the incident involving catfishing took place a few months later.

“The legal marriage really seemed very important to Meri,” Janelle, 55, told the cameras, expressing her suspicion that the decision to officially divorce Kody was not Meri’s choice.

“I was actually sort of speechless when she told us that she was actually doing it, because I thought Meri would never do this. I already had started to see that there was a little bit of favoritism for Robyn from Kody at that point, and I did worry,” she remembered

According to Christine’s recollection, “when Robyn first came into the family, she started talking to us about these other families where the first wife divorced the husband so he could marry the second wife and legally adopt the kids.” Christine is 52.

According to Christine, Robyn “mentioned that several times through the years, like she was putting that in there because she would have loved that to happen.” She did this in order to “plant” the concept into the family’s minds.

“I don’t think Meri felt like it was planted,” she continued. “I think Meri felt like it was her own idea.”

Robyn asserted, however, that the suggestion that she “planted an idea in Meri’s head is an absolute lie.”

“I never said it. I don’t even know anyone who divorced their first wife so that the second wife could adopt kids. I’ve never even heard of that before,” Robyn stated. “Meri told me when she made the offer that when we were getting to know each other, she had had the idea in her head to offer to give me the legal marriage so that Kody could adopt my kids.”

Robyn went on to say, “I never even wanted to be legally married to Kody.”

“I was actually really grateful that I wasn’t going to be legally married to Kody because I’d gone through so much trauma with my legal divorce in my last marriage,” she stated. “I was quite pleased and joyful in my spiritual union. There was nothing else I needed.

Robyn joined the Brown family in 2010, making her Kody’s fourth wife and a member of the Brown family. At one point in time, he had been legally married to Meri since the year 1990.

This was in addition to the fact that he had been spiritually married to Janelle since 1993 and Christine since 1994.

As a prerequisite for Kody to legally marry Robyn and adopt her children from her previous marriage, Meri divorced him in 2014. This allowed Robyn to adopt her children.

After thirty years of marriage, the long-term couple ultimately divorced in 2023. Meri subsequently obtained an official divorce decree from their church, alleging abandonment as the reason for the divorce.

Not only did Janelle and Christine divorce Kody in the months that preceded his divorce from Meri, but they also divorced him.
