FORNEY – Gunfire erupted between occupants of a vehicle and pedestrians near Forney schools, leaving one dead and another badly injured, triggering a lockdown of schools, officials said Friday.
The incident took at around 2 p.m. in the vicinity of Windmill Farms Boulevard and Reeder Road, which is where Brown Middle School is situated.
According to Kaufman County Precinct 2 Constable Jason Johnson, the incident started when passengers in a white sedan got into a fight with people who were walking down Chisholm Trail, which is located near Spyglass Drive. Johnson stated that gunfire was exchanged, and the white vehicle drove away and came to a stop at Brown Middle School.
The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office provided an update soon after 6:30 p.m. stating that “one adult male has been transported to a Dallas area hospital, while another adult male has been pronounced deceased.”
According to the sheriff’s office, two adult males are currently in custody.
Forney ISD made a statement to parents saying, “No incidents occurred inside our campuses.”
According to the sheriff’s office, “Authorities emphasize that there is no ongoing threat to the community, and no additional suspects are being sought at this time.”
The following schools were placed in secure status: North Forney High School, Brown Middle School, Smith Intermediate, Dewberry Elementary, Blackburn Elementary, and Forney Learning Academy. As stated on the Forney Independent School District’s website, this means that the exterior doors are closed and no one is permitted to enter or leave the campuses, but business continues as usual inside.
Just after 3 p.m., the district alerted parents that the secure status had been revoked at five campuses: North Forney, Smith, Dewberry, Blackburn, and Forney Learning Academy. Brown Middle School was cleaned at a later time.
The district made an announcement just before 3:30 p.m. stating, “We will begin early dismissal of students from Brown at this time.” “At 4 p.m., students who walk home will be discharged as usual.
Bus lines may be running a little behind schedule. During the dismissing procedure, staff members will stay on campus with the pupils. We appreciate your understanding while we make efforts to ensure that students get home safely.
The Kaufman County Criminal Investigative Division and the Texas Rangers are there at the location to conduct the investigation.
According to the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, “The investigation is still in progress, and additional information will be shared as it is obtained.”
