Tragic Phoenix ATV Crash: Teen Dies After Flipping into Dry Canal, Second Teen Hospitalized

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department has announced that one of the teenage guys who was hospitalized after flipping an ATV about 30 feet down into a dry ditch has died. The older teenager remains in the hospital.

On Thursday afternoon, first responders were dispatched to a location close to 47th Avenue and Cholla Street after receiving reports of an ATV accident. According to officials, the off-road vehicle was discovered flipped over in the canal.

Footage from Sky12 shows the ATV crashing through a gate that is located next to the canal. According to officials, the two teenage boys were in “extremely critical condition” when they were rushed to the hospital.

According to investigators, the younger of the two teenagers was the one who died, and they think that he was driving when the accident happened. The family recognized the teenager as Nolan Allen Coffland, who was 16 years old. He is referred to be a “loved and lively son.”

“Nolan was a junior at Centennial High School: a player on the JV football team a straight-A student, an ardent fisherman. Nolan had a great love for working on vehicles, spending time with his family and friends, and enjoying life to the fullest. We are without words on his untimely death and continue to pray for his best friend who is fitting for his life. According to a statement from the family, “Services are being planned for our sweet boy who was loved and missed by all.”

According to Steve Mangum, a man who lives in the area, the incident was not unexpected. He shared this information with 12News.

“They’re simply buzzing around everywhere. Mangum stated, “That is the more significant issue at the moment.”

Mangum said he routinely sees people driving off-roading vehicles through his area, especially up and down the canal.

According to Mangum, “Kids love it nowadays because they ride their quads, they ride their motorcycles, they ride their dirt bikes.” “Many times, they come around here and spin out, hitting the curbs and knocking their tires off.”

Mangum stated that this is not the first accident he has witnessed, and he is concerned that it will not be the last.

“I hope this encourages some sort of response.” The police have been summoned numerous times. I know they have their plate full,” Mangum remarked.

Officials are looking at surveillance footage from the area that might have recorded the crash.
