Suitcase Containing Human Remains Discovered in East River, Investigation Underway

The New York Police Department is currently investigating the discovery of human remains inside a suitcase in the East River in New York City on Wednesday.

Around 5:30 p.m., the NYPD’s Harbor Unit removed the luggage from the sea close to Governor’s Island, where the remains were found. Emergency personnel arrived at Pier 17 after the body was taken there and verified the person’s death.

The inquiry was still ongoing as of Thursday morning, and the authorities had yet to identify the person whose remains were discovered.

Investigators were trying to figure out how the remains got into the river, and the NYPD said the cause of death would be decided by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Investigators are looking into every possibility, but the case’s circumstances are yet unknown.

An frantic search for clues that could explain the death and identify the culprit has been triggered by the discovery of human remains in the water.

Authorities are concentrating their efforts on identifying the person and obtaining evidence to back up the probe, but the situation is still uncertain.

The fact that this discovery is reminiscent of a similar horrific instance that occurred in New York City two years ago makes it very unsettling. The remains of a 22-year-old woman were discovered in two suitcases in Brooklyn in September 2022.

In one instance, neighbors had complained of a bad smell emanating from the flat where the woman had been residing, so authorities had been contacted to request a wellness check on her.

After going missing for a few days, the woman was eventually found to be D’Asia Johnson. Investigators assumed she had been murdered and dismembered because her remains had been concealed inside two luggage.

Eric Gonzalez, the Brooklyn District Attorney, declared in November 2022 that Justin Williams, Johnson’s ex-boyfriend, had been charged with murder and dismemberment.

Williams allegedly dismembered Johnson, put her body in the luggage, and stayed in the flat for more than a month, according to officials.

He tried to mask the stench of decay with towels and cleaning supplies at that period. The case shook the community, and New York City was rocked by the specifics of the crime.
