Minnesota Man Faces $47K Medical Bill After Catching Flu on Free Norwegian Cruise

A man from Minnesota won a free week-long cruise vacation to the Caribbean for himself and his fiancée. However, he ended up catching the illness while on the cruise and received a shocking medical bill for $47,000.

On January 5, Mike Cameron and his girlfriend, Tamra Masterman, won a free cruise trip to Norway that departed from Miami.

However, when Cameron from Braham, Minnesota, got the virus, what began as a fantasy vacation to a tropical location rapidly turned into a disaster.

The sick tourist went to the medical center on the Norwegian Encore ship for treatment and became better three days later.

Cameron was surprised to find out that he was responsible for paying the almost $50,000 medical bill when the couple’s trip to the Caribbean was over.

“To turn around the day we are leaving and get handed a $47,000 bill I just didn’t even know what to do,” he stated to the local news station last week.

Cameron was surprised by the bill because the crew members had told him not to worry while he was receiving treatment.

“Everyone in the medical ward kept saying ‘Don’t worry you have $20,000 coverage, you’ll be just fine.”

According to the station, the cruise line charged two credit cards that Cameron had on file to their limit, and he still owes $21,000.

“You start thinking, ‘Are you going to lose your house, are you going to lose your cars’?” Masterman continued.

The pair bought trip insurance from the cruise line, which covers charges of up to $20,000, and they also have health insurance. However, Cameron is in a holding pattern because both of them are saying that the other is accountable for the bill.

“The traveler’s insurance doesn’t want to pay it until we run it by our health insurance. The health insurance doesn’t want to pay it because it’s abroad,” Masterman stated.

Cameron is unsure how he will pay the high amount, as he is in a state of uncertainty.

“I don’t know how I’m ever going to pay them off, I’m going to have to, but, I don’t know how,” he stated.

According to the couple, the bill came with a statement from Norwegian that stated their price was “closely comparable to other cruise lines and is what we believe to be fair and reasonable.”
