The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified a sorbet-filled mochi that was recalled owing to an unreported allergy as the highest risk level.
The My Mochi Ice Cream Company, located in Vernon, California, has recalled 1,350 cases of its peach mango-flavored dessert after it was revealed that the items may contain pasteurized cooked egg white, which was not included on the label.
The company warned in a statement that “individuals who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs are at risk of experiencing a serious or potentially life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that approximately 8 percent of children and 6 percent of adults in the United States have at least one type of food allergy.
Earlier this month, there were two reports of people having mild adverse reactions after eating the ice cream.
On January 6, the peach mango sorbet mochi goods that were affected were taken off the market. Mochi is a sweet treat that consists of ice cream or sorbet encased in a shell made of pounded sticky rice.
The FDA classified the recall as a Class I risk category on January 28. This means that “there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
The impacted batch of items was marketed in orange boxes that weighed 7.5 ounces in total and had six 1.25-ounce containers. These products were available in the freezer departments of retail establishments, including Wegmans and Target.
If you are worried that you may have bought the sorbet mochi, you can check the lot codes on the box to see if it is the right one. The lot codes are 337-24 and 341-24.

The products that are affected contain the universal product code (UPC) 0-70934-99868-1 and have use-by dates that fall between December 2 and December 6, 2025.
The My Mochi Ice Cream Company stated that the problem with the product labeling was discovered to be a “temporary breakdown” in the company’s packaging operations after an investigation was conducted.
