Milk Recall Alert: 20,000 Cases Recalled in Three States Due to Safety Issues

Between concerns about the potential for avian flu contamination and the growing popularity of raw milk among some demographics (one brand was recalled in Connecticut late last week, according to Food Safety News), dairy milk has been receiving a lot of media attention.

Despite this debate, many American households continue to support the health benefits of milk. Late Friday brought additional milk news for some of these customers: a well-known brand was recalling a product with long-lead expiration dates.

According to a report by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Colorado-based Horizon Organic Dairy, LLC began a recall of 19,688 cases, or 236,256 eight-ounce containers, of Horizon Organic Aseptic Plain Whole Milk on December 13, 2024. According to research, this is a reference to nonperishable, single-serve, shelf-stable whole milk drink boxes.

The product was supplied in Arizona, California, and Nevada, according to the FDA. The following four synonymous lot codes and expiration dates are provided, though it’s unclear if any products were distributed outside of those western region states:

IDEAL PRIOR TO/BY

  • March 3, 2025
  • March 4, 2025
  • March 6, 2025
  • March 7, 2025

According to the FDA study, other identifying information includes the following:

  • UPC: 3663207113 (12 pack); 3663207127 (single unit)
  • Distributed by: Horizon Organic Dairy, LLC (Horizon), Broomfield, CO 80021

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) assigned the recall with a class II risk level on January 17. According to their definition, this is “a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

For the time being, it is not known which merchants carried these particular lots; nevertheless, one potential solution would be to return the goods to the store where it was first purchased.

Horizon Dairy is a B-corporation that has been certified.

The United States Chamber of Commerce argues that in order for a firm to have this legal structure, it requires that “shareholders hold the company accountable to produce a financial profit as well as some sort of public benefit.”

Horizon Organic is an organic dairy, so it is quite likely that at least part of the public benefits it assures contribute to the preservation of the environment.
