The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States has released an update regarding a nationwide recall of mushrooms, declaring on January 14 that the mushrooms have been classified as Class I, which is the highest risk warning possible.
In the past, a recall was initiated after it was discovered that samples of the product contained listeria.
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a Class I recall is defined as “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
Listeria infection, also referred to as listeriosis, is the third largest cause of death in the United States that is caused by foodborne illness, as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
According to the FDA, which estimates that it is responsible for 260 deaths each year, people who are particularly at danger include young children, senior residents, and those with immune systems that are compromised.
According to a recent report provided by the organization, the classification took place on January 14th.
The Daily Veggies enoki mushrooms manufactured by New Age International Inc., based in New York, were recalled after a contamination was detected.
The contamination was identified as a result of a lab examination conducted by the State of Maryland Department of Health, which determined that the mushrooms were contaminated with listeria.
The items were distributed across the country in transparent plastic containers weighing 200 grams (7 ounces) and bearing the product code “8809159458890” on the reverse side.
An announcement made by New Age International stated that the remaining items were disposed of in a destructive manner.
On Monday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that there had been no illnesses reported to yet in connection with the product.
