DAVIS Is — On Monday, the search for a suspect in Davis continues after a shooting that occurred at Community Park on Saturday afternoon caused havoc as hundreds of people enjoyed the beloved Picnic Day tradition that is associated with the University of California, Davis.
Two teenagers and a woman who is 24 years old were shot, according to the Davis police department, and all of them are expected to be okay.
Regarding Picnic Day, I do not wish to speak negatively about it. According to Erin Dunning, who was present when the bullets were fired on Saturday, the spectacle that occurred here was not Picnic Day.
As of Monday, the Davis Police Department termed this investigation as a “round-the-clock” and “all hands on deck” operation. They are working in conjunction with the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to once again close off certain areas of Community Park.
Metal detectors were used throughout the afternoon and into the late evening on Monday to seek for any evidence that had been left behind. This included bullet shell casings and anything else that could lead them to a suspect.
At this time, the Davis police department does not have a credible description of the suspect that they can share to the community. However, they can assure the community that they are actively pursuing every lead and searching each neighborhood in the surrounding area for any home security video that can provide them with information on the culprit.
When the shots were fired, the park was the location of an event that was being held by the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity of the University of California, Davis. It was not possible for Davis police to confirm a connection; however, they did say that the student group is participating in their inquiry and that they are working along with the authorities.
On Sunday, the mayor and police chief of Davis issued a joint statement in which they stated that, according to preliminary evidence, the shooting looked to be targeted and “…was not motivated by a desire to randomly harm community members.” It is expected that the inquiry procedure would take some time because there are a significant number of prospective witnesses and indicators.
On Monday afternoon, there were two incidents that occurred in Davis that were unrelated to the shooting that prompted extra uproar.
The Patwin Elementary School was placed under lockdown for a short period of time due to a connection to an investigation being conducted by the Davis police department at an apartment complex located a half mile away on Shasta Drive.
Immediately after an incident of domestic violence, one man was taken into custody.
“I was told that a woman came dangerously close to being stabbed. Now, we hear of the shooting that occurred during the picnic. I am becoming increasingly concerned about my safety in Davis as a result of this. Daniella Nkereuwem, a tenant of the apartment complex, expressed her regret because Davis has traditionally been regarded as a secure location. “It is unfortunate that this is changing,” she added.
